New guidance to help SMEs bid for and win Government contracts

New guidance will help small and medium-sized businesses bid for and win Government procurement contracts, it has been announced.

The Selling To Government Guide was published on Small Business Saturday, an annual event designed to build a buzz around local firms.

According to the report, the guide contains advice on where business owners can look online for public procurement opportunities and tips on how firms can “showcase” their strengths during the bidding process.

Government contracts include anything from supplying hospital equipment to providing public sector pensions.

The guide follows proposals to reform the public sector bidding process to level the playing field for small businesses. The Transforming Public Procurement green paper outlines several measures that will overhaul the current EU rules and remove barriers for smaller suppliers.

As part of these plans, the Government will also develop a single, central platform which suppliers have to register on, so they only have to submit their details once to qualify for public sector procurement.

According to the latest figures, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) won more than £15 billion in public contracts in 2021.

But with more than £50 billion in Government contracts available, more can be done to help the smallest businesses command a larger share of the market.
